Women

Women with disabilities face multiple, compounded forms of discrimination and stereotyping, which makes them more vulnerable to gender violence and creates cascades of challenges throughout their lifetime. While women with disabilities face oppression we must also acknowledge the pride they can have in their own disability and reject messages of shame and stigma. LETA Solutions programs for women create space to acknowledge oppression and look at ways to reject shame and stigma and explore the resistance of the disability identities and community.

Her Power! Her Pride! Owning Our Place at the Table
Women* with Disabilities* Board Leadership Program

Her Power! is currently accepting applications for a five-month leadership program for women with disabilities ages 20 – 35 interested in serving on the board of directors of a nonprofit organization.

There are many ways to share your knowledge and take on leadership roles in our community. One way is to serve is on a board. This leadership program is for women with disabilities ages 20- 35 who want to serve on a board. This program is aimed at women who have not served on a board before. Applications will be accepted from individuals that have served on a board in the past or are currently on a board but feel lost in the process or feel like their voice isn’t currently being heard.

In this cohort-based program, we will explore together knowledge and skills to serve on a board. There will be five sessions between May 2022 and September, and applicants must commit to attending all sessions. Between sessions, there will be small homework activities. Each participant will get ongoing support from women with disabilities as they learn with their fellow cohort members and apply for board positions. A Her Power staff member will work with you to identify board opportunities and support you in putting forward your application.

A staff member will be available to answer questions throughout the process. You’ll spend time getting to know other women with disabilities from across the country who are also interested in serving as leaders in their communities through board membership.

Together we will explore topics such as:

  • Vision to Goal: Taking the Leap to Apply
  • Robert’s Rules: How to get your voice heard in the land of Robert’s rules
  • Deciding where you want to serve: Disability specific or non-disability specific
  • Disability pride, rejecting shame, and giving the diplomatic (or not) middle finger to ableism
  • Who are we representing? Remember your community and allyship
  • Yes you are ready- imposter syndrome and taking a seat at the table
  • Financial documents: how to read them and how to understand them

This program will be held virtually 12:00 pm – 2:00 pm Eastern Time on the following dates:

  • June 8th and 9th
  • July 13th or 14th
  • August 17th and 18th
  • September 7th

This program will select 8 – 10 participants, and more than half the participants will be from Michigan.

This program is to increase the number of women with disabilities who are represented on boards. Women includes cis-women, trans-women, femme/feminine-identifying,  genderqueer, and non-binary folks. We want to include all individuals that believe that their identity advances this goal. If you believe that is you. We welcome you to apply.
